TPO in Gel Polish: What You Need to Know
At BACKSTAGE, we know our clients love the flawless shine and long-lasting finish of gel manicures and we do too! Recently, though, you may have seen headlines about TPO, an ingredient in many gel nail polishes and its upcoming ban in Europe. Our Founder was even invited to share insights with the Daily Mail on this topic, highlighting the importance of clarity and reassurance for clients.
Here’s what you need to know about TPO, why it’s being phased out and the options available to you at BACKSTAGE.

What is TPO?
TPO, or trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide, is a chemical known as a photoinitiator. It’s what makes gel polish harden under UV or LED light, giving manicures their durable, chip-resistant finish. Without TPO, or another photoinitiator, the gel would not properly cure.
TPO has been widely used in the nail industry for many years. However, recent scientific reviews have prompted regulators to re-examine its safety, particularly when used in cosmetic products, which has prompted the ban.

What are the risks?
Concerns around TPO come from animal studies that suggest, at very high doses, it could impact fertility and has been classified in the EU as a Category 1B substance (potentially carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic to reproduction).
It’s important to keep perspective:
- The levels of TPO in gel polish are extremely small.
- It is applied only to the nail plate, not the skin, limiting absorption.
- Professional salon application further minimises contact and ensures safe use.
For most people, the risks are considered negligible. The regulatory changes are precautionary, designed to eliminate even theoretical risks with long-term, repeated exposure.

Is TPO going to be banned in the UK?
Yes, but not right away. The EU has already banned TPO in cosmetics from September 2025 and salons there will be required to switch to alternatives. The UK, which reviews cosmetic safety separately post-Brexit, is expected to follow suit between 2026 and 2027.
This gives salons and brands time to adapt. Many leading polish companies are already reformulating their products to be TPO-free, ensuring clients can continue to enjoy gel manicures safely.

Should I stop getting gel manicures?
There’s no need to give up gels if you love them. The ban is aimed at one ingredient, not the treatment itself. With new formulations already emerging, you can still enjoy the long-lasting shine of gel nails with confidence.
That said, some clients are also exploring natural alternatives. At BACKSTAGE, the Japanese Manicure has grown hugely popular. This centuries-old treatment strengthens and nourishes the natural nail using beeswax, keratin, bamboo, red algae and pearl powder. The result? A healthy, natural pink glow, without polish or curing lamps. It’s the perfect reset between gels or a luxurious option for those who prefer to keep their nails natural.

The BACKSTAGE Approach
Ultimately, the choice comes down to your lifestyle and preferences. If you enjoy gels, simply ask about TPO-free brands at BACKSTAGE, we have lots of options. If you’d like to give your nails a restorative break, the Japanese Manicure is a beautiful, holistic alternative.
